The recent news of a 25-year-old IIT-IIM graduate’s tragic death by suicide due to work pressure has left many of us questioning the relentless pursuit of success and the toll it takes on our mental well-being. In a society that often measures worth by academic achievements and professional accolades, it’s easy to overlook the human behind the resume — a person with hopes, dreams, and struggles just like anyone else.

From the moment we step into the educational system, we’re thrust into a race where success is defined by grades, university admissions, and job offers. For many, the pressure to excel becomes suffocating, leaving little room for self-discovery and personal fulfillment. Even after achieving coveted milestones like admission to IIT or IIM and securing high-paying jobs, the pressure doesn’t dissipate; if anything, it intensifies.

The story of this young professional serves as a poignant reminder of the silent battles waged behind closed doors. Despite outward success and societal expectations, the weight of work pressure can become unbearable, leading individuals to believe that ending their lives is the only way out. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

As a society, we must confront the toxic culture that prioritizes productivity over well-being. Employers have a responsibility to create work environments where employees feel supported, valued, and heard. This starts with fostering a culture of open communication about mental health issues and providing access to resources for support and treatment.

Similarly, individuals must prioritize their own mental health and well-being. It’s essential to recognize when the demands of work become too overwhelming and to seek help when needed. This may involve setting boundaries, practicing self-care, and reaching out to friends, family, or mental health professionals for support.

In times of crisis, the support of colleagues and friends can make all the difference. Rather than turning a blind eye or offering empty platitudes, it’s crucial to show genuine compassion and empathy. Letting someone know that they’re not alone and that their struggles are valid can provide a lifeline in moments of despair.

Above all, we must remember that nothing is worth sacrificing our mental health and well-being for. No job, no amount of success, no societal expectations are worth more than our lives. We owe it to ourselves and to each other to prioritize our mental health and seek help when needed.

The tragic passing of this young professional serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support in the workplace and beyond. Let us honor their memory by advocating for change, fostering supportive environments, and breaking the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for help. You are not alone, and there is hope for a brighter tomorrow.
